What are the benefits of international education?

If you are considering an international school, you are already thinking beyond grades and exams. You are thinking about your child’s future: who they will become, what they will do, and where they could go.

At Hamelin-Laie International School Barcelona, we believe international education does something no local school can replicate. It nurtures the kind of global citizen who is ready for a world that is always changing – critical thinkers who are confident and resilient. Here is what that looks like in practice.

Your child learns to see the world differently

When your child shares a classroom with something important happens. Difference becomes normal, rather than unfamiliar. Your child learns to listen to others, to respect different viewpoints and to communicate across cultures. They develop empathy, curiosity and the ability to find common ground – crucial skills to develop in a global world.

Academic results that open doors

Students follow the Spanish National Curriculum through secondary school before progressing to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the Spanish National Bachillerato.

Our students consistently outperform global and national averages on the IB Diploma, which is respected by top universities across the UK, Europe, the US and beyond. The IB Diploma Programme teaches students to think critically, write persuasively and approach problems from multiple angles – abilities that are essential for university and career success.

Academic approach built for every stage of childhood

From the earliest years, students benefit from the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC), which focuses on play based, inquiry led learning and drives curiosity and independence. At this stage, learning is designed to feel like exploration, which is very much part of the experience at Hamelin Laie.

As children grow, they move into the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC). These frameworks are built around thematic, cross curricular units that support the development of critical thinking, global awareness, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. All of this sits alongside the Spanish National Curriculum, enriching how subjects are taught and preparing students for future pathways, including the IB Diploma Programme. Together, this creates a coherent educational journey from early childhood through to university, with each stage building meaningfully on the last.

Three languages from day one

Multilingualism is another key benefit of international schools. At Hamelin-Laie, teaching and learning takes place in English, Spanish, and Catalan. This trilingual approach is rare, even among international schools in Barcelona, and it gives your child a powerful advantage. Research shows that multilingual children develop stronger memory, better problem-solving skills and greater cognitive flexibility.

More specifically, fluency in these three languages means your child can fully integrate into life in Catalonia, compete with an extra edge in a Spanish-speaking world, and study or work in English anywhere.

Life Skills that Go Beyond the Classroom

One of our alumni, Oscar, described Hamelin-Laie as “a place full of opportunities to grow, where I discovered my talents and became the person I am today.” This is something we often hear from our former students. From school trips to international competitions, from learning chess to performing music onstage, the experiences your child has at school – both in and beyond the classroom – will shape who they become as a person.

As our Principal, Sarah Osborne-James, puts it, the goal is clear: to ensure that each student excels academically and develops the essential life skills needed to navigate and influence a constantly evolving world. International education accomplishes both at once.

A Community that Feels Like the Real World

Most children grow up surrounded by people who share their background, their language and their assumptions. International school students grow up surrounded by the world. They learn what genuine inclusion means. They build friendships across cultures. They graduate ready not just for university, but for life.

At Hamelin-Laie, your child will discover a thriving international community on our beautiful seaside campus in Maresme, just 20 minutes from the centre of Barcelona. In this setting, our students feel safe, known and challenged to achieve their best.

Is International Education Right for Your Child?

If you want your child to be academically prepared, globally minded and confident in who they are, international education offers something extraordinary. An international school can help your child build the skills to thrive in a global future – no matter what they want to do, or where they want to go.

At Hamelin-Laie, we take a holistic approach to education, where every student is seen as an individual. Our teachers are trained to find the right balance of challenge and support to help your child unlock their potential.
